About
Located between Axminster and Lyme Regis in the County of Devon, Long Wood is a 5-acre woodland consisting of a mixture of coniferous trees of larch and douglas fir interspersed with redwood, beech and an under canopy of ash, oak, hazel and holly.
Much of the work taking place in Long Wood could be described as sympathetic restoration; this has been an enormous task - bringing light into the gloom created over the last century where foresters had planted conifers to meet timber demand at the expense of wildlife-friendly habitat. The eastern end of Long Wood has been cleared and a tree planting programme commenced – however, invasive species such as reed, bramble and gorse has taken hold to the detriment of the young trees.
The main objectives of the woodland is to provide a safe haven for animals, an unspoilt natural area for plants and a place of peace and tranquillity for all our people; visitors and volunteers alike, who want to experience the wonders of nature.
Projects
A tree planting programme was started 5 years ago and many of the young trees were smothered by invasive species such as reed, bramble and gorse.
Some of these invasive plants are necessary to encourage a diverse and thriving woodland that can be a home to many birds, animals and invertebrates, but the invasive species have rather taken over and it is within this area that our volunteers have helped us clear the way for other plants, for example we have planted up the cleared areas with wild flower seeds to help bees and other pollen loving insects.
Long Wood welcomes visitors - find out where we are on our 'Contact' page.
Donate
We are always on the look out for garden tools and implements, large garden sacks and other receptacles for garden waste.
If you can help contact us and we can arrange collection.
We desperately need funds to help pay for replacement trees, tree stakes and other essentials.
Wild flower seeds especially welcome.
If you would like to make a donation please contact us or donate online here.
Get Involved
Long Wood's volunteers are its beating heart, contributing to and leading projects across the entire range of activities. Our volunteers are encouraged to follow their own interests and can choose to expand their skills and knowledge and know that the work they are doing has a real impact; creating a space for nature by restoring Long Wood to its natural state that is great for wildlife and great for our volunteers and visitors.
If you would like to volunteer get in touch and contact us.
